A little girl's birthday
Childhood Memory
by Claire Tennant
It was my eighth birthday. It appeared that everyone had forgotten. Yes, we had just arrived in Australia but…
The kind postman came, asking if there was a little girl who deserved a parcel. I opened it—a child’s charm bracelet. Our grandparents had sent it. Screaming with delight, I ran outside to show everyone. Why was Mummy crying on my birthday? She missed the family; I didn’t know that. Now I’m as old as Grandma was then.
