A Poem of Idioms

Going Down Swinging

by Mark Jackson

Give me a minute and I’ll spill the beans

Lend me your ear and listen up well

I have to be quick; I don’t have much time

I’m against the clock; I’m running out of time

I won’t beat about the bush, listen up well

I’ll give it to you straight; if you lend me your ear

But I’m not feeling too well

I’ve been under the weather

So, I’m not doing so well

I’m up against the ropes and I’m about to go down

I cannot concentrate on the goal

I cannot see the way ahead

I cannot get my head straight

I cannot give you the answer

If I cannot remember the question

I’ve been sitting on this fence for as long as I can remember

I’ve been out in the wilderness; I cannot find my direction

I’ve been losing my temper easily; I am on a short fuse

Like a bull in a china shop; I’m about to blow my top

I’ve been shot down in flames

I cannot take the pressure

I’ve had my head in the clouds for too long

I will no longer turn a blind eye

I’ve been shaking like a dog

I’m not a safe pair of hands

But I go on through thick and thin and also rain or shine

Others fall by the wayside, but I go on and on

Am I barking up the wrong tree

Have I bitten off more than I can chew

Don’t tell me to break a leg

When I’ve been awake for days

I don’t see eye to eye with you

I lie awake at night, I worry I missed the boat

All I feel in this room is panic now

All I feel in this room is doom

Is it time to call it a day; is it time to stop the clock

I might be at my wit’s end

I might be at the end of my rope

I have to tie up some loose ends

I think I'm at my wit’s end

I think I'm at the end of my rope

I'm at my wit’s end

I'm at the end of my rope

I have to tie up those loose ends

And when I do

I’ll be going down swinging
