A year of sorrow and loss

Requiem

by gansach

We thought 2020 was the neverending,
horrible year~
Year of pandemic disease
run rampant~
Year of death in multitudes~
Year of isolation, separation,
lonely hearts unable to share
final moments~
Sorrow untold, sadnesses unfold,
winding through our secluded lives.
Wave after wave, unending~
please hurry, New Year, and
put an end to our suffering.
2021 bright dawning with the sun~
at last we shall see the light
at the end of the tunnel~
hesitatingly, tentatively
dipping our toes into the shallows of society,
into the pools of normalcy,
into the new way of life.
But wait! What new horror overtakes us
as the disease rears its ugly head and strikes us down.
We fall to its clutches,
start a domino chain of
madness, hysteria, separation, chaos~
Finally, emerging stronger,
we feel we have weathered the storm~
Only to find none of it was as
heartbreaking as losing the one
who is our foundation~
patriarch of our being~
last of a generation~
nearly a century in the making~
teacher, counselor, supporter,
historian, keeper of our flame,
son, brother, cousin, husband,
father, grandfather, great-grandfather.
How will we find our way
without your light~
Yet, we will find it,
we will go on because you taught us
how to survive~
Your lessons will lead us~
Your love sustain us~
Your wisdom guide us~
Your legacy worn proudly.
Be at peace now~Rest.

My family's lives were forever changed by the Covid pandemic. As an in-school program supervisor for children, my job ended--after 55 years of working, sometimes two jobs at a time, I was sitting at home, idle. I also lost a dear friend to Covid. I spent the next school year homeschooling my grandchildren who were doing virtual learning--my granddaughter is deaf/blind & unable to use a computer so I was the conduit between her team of Special Ed. teachers and her. Just as we thought the worst was over, my daughter was hospitalized with Covid &, the day after she returned home, I was admitted for the same. We were just getting back on our feet. Due to the disease, we'd been unable to visit my dad who was 99 years old. We hadn't seen him for 4 months. On Thanksgiving, my brother called to say he'd passed away. He was 3 months short of his 100th birthday. We were devastated-he'd been our rock for so long. The photo is one of the last times we'd been able to get together--a driveway picnic Father's Day celebration. He is dearly missed.
