Renaldo's Regret

by Verna Cole Mitchell

Renaldo was an errant knight.
He lived in days of old.
No other knight was brave as he,
Nor was there one so bold.

He swaggered as he strode about,
His jeweled sword agleam.
Renaldo never suffered from
A lack of self- esteem.

This knight, he wooed a maiden fair.
Rosetta was her name.
Her beauty lured a host of men
Like moths are drawn to flame.

He vanquished all her other swains
With deeds of chivalry,
Except for Poet Percival,
Her beau in rivalry.

Young Percival wrote odes to her,
Describing all her charms.
He sought her favor faithfully
With poetry, not arms.

A craftsman of the written word
Was Percival the poet.
The lovely verses that he wrote
Did eloquently show it.

For all Renaldo's posturing
With sword of power and might,
The pen of Percival's the thing
That brought her great delight.

Rosetta chose supremacy
Of pen o'er sword instead.
Renaldo rued the choice she made
When Percival she wed.
