Tape over shirt medicinal marijuana sponsor

Dolphins, tape, jersey sponsor

by LittleIrishman

In a recent National Rugby League (NRL) Round 7 match between the Redcliffe Dolphins and Parramatta Eels the Dolphins players had blank white tape over the top part of the front of their jerseys.

The very positive thing to come out of this match, played as a one-off at TIO Stadium in Darwin, was that the Dolphins thrashed the Eels, 44 to 16.

The Dolphins sit comfortably high on the NRL ladder in 3rd position, having 6 matches, 4 wins, and 2 losses.

Commentators, TV viewers, and fans-spectators at the stadium were asking this very question why the tape was there.

Most of the tape however had somewhat peeled or totally came off by the second half.

Apparently the team had taken on an official partner and sponsor in medicinal cannabis/marijuana in Alternaleaf just recently at the start of the NRL season in March 2024. It is an Australian-first partnership.

But it may have become controversial and therefore disallowed for the Dolphins by the NRL.

At least the title of Alternaleaf sounds catchy and professional. With such a title, certain people would think the company is linked to alternative medicine, but not necessarily medicinal cannabis/marijuana.

Alternaleaf has qualified nurses and doctors experienced in alternative treatment solutions. They have had over 300,000 patient consultations.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare conducted a National Drug Strategy Household Survey that found that in 2019 that 21,500 people over 14 years of age, or 2.7% at 600,000, were being treated with medicinal cannabis/marijuana. Alternaleaf would have quite a few of these people as patients.

One would think the players, trainers and coaches, and basically whole team management would have previously planned and consulted the NRL and relevant authorities before this happened.

This marijuana issue would be a strong example and lesson for other NRL teams, and in fact other elite sportspeople and teams not to indirectly or directly do the same.

Most people in societies worldwide know of and use the three standard substances of alcohol, smoking/cigarettes, and weed/marijuana/cannabis.

The name and substance of marijuana in general is a varied and sensitive issue for most people everywhere, still classing it as a possibly harmful and dangerous drug.

Medicinal marijuana is the in-thing at the moment for various people who are ill and/or in pain.

Yet for mental/psychological/psychotic issues, medicinal and standard marijuana is strongly recommended to be disallowed.

Some everyday people and stars and celebrities have used medicinal marijuana for these very reasons.

Example of relevant stars and celebrities here are:
- Louis Armstrong
- Whoopi Goldberg
- Susan Sarandon
- Mike Tyson
- Woody Harrelson
- Morgan Freeman
- Melissa Etheridge
- Willie Nelson
- Olivia Newton-John

Again, there is a fad and phenomenon with certain interested people, companies, and/or farmers to grow this very medicinal marijuana.

Emerging in 2016, the medicinal cannabis/marijuana industry has grown considerably. It has been legalised in 30 countries.

In Australia, in 2020-2021 there will be $31 million in revenue and 1,300 employed staff. In 2019 to 2020, there was an estimate of $62 million spend on research and development. The global market here is said to be worth $80 billion (US$ 62.6 billion) by 2024.
