Meeting Belphegor

by Bill Schott

Walking one day, through the woods of the town,

I remembered a path, from when --

Oh -- right. The memories again.

My youth was a trial that most would find odd,

Time spent arguing with invisible beings;

no one was seeing what I saw.

Traversing one day, back then,

through the woods of the town,

I discovered a hole, that became my heart.

There, in the woods, Belphegor stood.

I thought to run, but strength was denied,

so I absorbed all the evil

from this devil

which shows outward to all as sloth.

Somehow exiting the woods,

I returned to my home and did nothing.

Nothing was my goal,

my consciousness and soul.

I have since served no purpose,

save to bear mute testimony

to the sum of nothing

leading nowhere.
