Hidden By The Walls

Can the people bear to hear the Truth?

Will someone out there believe me?

You have absolutely no idea what people will do, even in the apartment next to you.

The walls perform their function well, hiding their secrets deep within.

But we had ways of making those walls talk.

I was tailing Monica Sellers. We knew there was a connection with Fritzky, but, exactly what, we still didn’t know.

So, I was up all night again on a stakeout.

I heard every one of her calls, watched her every movement.

After spending several nights on this case, I began to fall in love with her.

She told her roomie she was going out to Blaisdell’s Drugs.

Good, she still hasn’t noticed that bug on her wall.

As she stepped out, I followed close enough behind to avoid her notice, got into my car, and drove to Blaisdell’s.

Luckily, Blaisdell had a large enough window for me to see clearly.

Once inside, Monica went for the phone booth. She dialed a number.

So, that’s why I couldn’t make that link between Fritzky and her.

They use the drug store phone.

This land is so confounded by these small time hoods using their simple methods to stymie our more sophisticated devices.

I decided to confront Monica. Besides, it would be a good excuse to see up close the one I had fallen for.

As she walked out of the booth, I made like I bumped her.

Then I offered my apologies and we exchanged some small talk.

“Say,” she said, “Don’t I know you from somewhere?”

“It’s possible,” I said, “Maybe you caught me in my room at the Bardwell.”

“So that’s where I saw you,” she continued. “Well, since we’re both going the same way, how about stopping by for some...company?”

And, that’s how I got into her apartment.

Her roomie had left for a third-shift job cleaning offices.

Being alone with her, and having her so close, I guess I just sort of broke down.

After a few drinks, I said, “Monica, I know a great deal more about you than you would suspect!”

I confessed I was on undercover duty and I knew her connections with the mob.

I also told her I had fallen hopelessly in love with her.

As I was talking, the light seemed to plead with me to remain quiet. But I pointed out the wall below the light and revealed the bug and info I had gained.

“Listen, Monica,” I said. “Play it smart. You give me some dope on Fritzky and I’ll grab the fifty grand and you and I…well, you and I!...”

She played it smart, and we got to enjoy one another, really good.

When drinks were down and social hour ended, I said, “Now give me the dope! Where’s the dough hidden?”

Before she could respond, Fritzky burst in the door.

“Oh! I thought you’d never get here!” she cried.

“You must think we’re simple minded,” he said, “We knew all along you were trailin’ us! You want a reward? You got one!”

Fritzky tugged on the blinds, assuring they were shut. Dust flew over the room.

Then he pulled out his revolver and fired.

That dust was feeding me as I went down for the count.

Please believe me. I didn’t set out to be bad. Anyone can be tempted in this world.

I was just a hopeless fool who fell for it.
