The Pursuit of Liberty

by Paul McFarland

The bell of freedom rang long years ago
When Paul Revere then made his famous ride.
That April dawn, a patriotic glow
Engulfed the landscape like a rushing tide.

The villagers and farmers all turned out
To face the lobsterbacks from o'er the sea.
Above the musket fire was heard the shout
Of valiant men in search of liberty.

And when the cloak of tyranny was shed,
And those oppressed were finally set free,
Those ragged soldiers gathered up their dead
And men met to decide what was to be.

Then Thomas Jefferson took up his quill
To write those precious words that we use still.
