Suicidal Stars

by Lyle Nußbaum

When depression takes hold of my unsettled mind, the
Loneliness prevails, my dark thoughts become darker,
A heaviness weighs down on my frail shoulders, the
Pain is palpable, and tears freely flow each night.
End it all, a suicidal thought appears.  The
Whispering demons making the thought seem brighter
Than it is, hiding the fact it is really the
Opposite, a call to extinguish glowing stars
That have been placed here to help lead me out of the
Darkness that surrounds me.  Yet I descend deeper
Into the swirling pool of guilt, fears, and shame; the
Overwhelming feelings joined by sorrow and grief.
Drowning in despair, I cannot save myself; the
Cold hand of death approaches, drawing ever closer.
Raising a desperate cry, finding salvation is
At hand, I am rescued by a great, loving God.
