Empty Nest Blues

by Glenda Collins

Ev’rything changes or so it seems.

All the children grown and now moving.

Even the ones you thought would stay,

have decided to move away.

I shouldn’t be sad, I know that’s true.

It’s what grown up kids are s’pose to do.

But I cannot help but feel quite down.

Nothing left for me in this small town.

At my age it’s strange to be without,

Some chaos and joyful noise about.

I sit in silence, it’s deafening.

This is getting old- I’m reckoning.

Is this what my mom and dad feel?

When I don’t call or have a meal?

How backwards time works in helping us-

understand empathy and purpose.

Time marches on, and so must I.

Get up, move- find new things to try.

And so I will, this I promise to.

But today I think I’ll just feel blue

Picture from Pinterest. I am very proud of my children and glad I have raised them to be kind and productive members of society. I am also glad they are moving on to bigger and better things, each completing college and seeking dreams outside our rural area. But there are days like today when I miss them terribly and recent news that my one and only grandbaby will be moving further away soon is hitting my blue button today. :-(
