Melancholy Moon

by Glenda Collins

If I could float atop a moonbeam

And ride it up so high

I would lie down on it

And watch the days drift by

Up and up I’d climb

On that luminous ray

Traveling through dimensions

Where I might like to stay

I would not turn back

I’d lose all track of time

The mirror in the sky

I would surely find

I’d gently step upon it

Looking down I’d hope to see

The truth in the image

Staring back at me

I wonder if I’d notice

her bruises and deep scars

I wonder if I’d ask her

why she dwells amidst the stars

Would I be brave and ask her,

To come back down with me

Tell her it’s not so cold

That she needn’t be lonely.

Or would I stare in silence

At that sad reflection

Feel her melancholy

Her loss and deep rejection

I wonder, could I convince her-

Or would I hide there too

I think we’d sit and ponder

The darkness and the blue

Not knowing what to say

Or how to bring her peace

I believe I’d sing a song

Her pain I’d hope to ease

I would sing it soft & tender

I would sing it soft and sweet

I’d hope that it would soothe her

Give her strength that could defeat

That dark side of the moon

That binds her oh so tight

A tune to carry deep within her

And arm her for the fight

One day she may come down

From that distant moon

Til then I’ll have to wait

Though I hope to see her soon
