I Found My Heart In San Francisco Ch 1 Pt 1

I Found My Heart Pt.1 The Day I Fell In Love. The Dream Begins
Thursday, February 12, 1984. 12:30 p.m.
San Francisco, California.

Valentine's Day. A day for romance and love, flowers and candy. A girl's heart wishes for these things. The worst thing in the world to a woman is to have to spend such a holiday at home alone, especially when her heart yearns for a special man to with whom to share it.

LaKara Rhodes truly thought that would be the case for her this year. It would be lonely, that's true, but it didn't really matter to her. Or so she thought. She had just gotten out of one of the worst relationships she had ever had in her life. She had not totally and completely given up on love, but she had been hurt by it recently and she would rather be alone than go through what she had been through with her ex-boyfriend Donnie ever again. She wasn't in love right now and quite honestly, she didn't think she would be falling in love again anytime soon. So much for Valentine's Day and romance. . .

That thought made her a little sad because her heart needed so much to believe in the promise of love and romance. Her heart craved both of these things. She needed someone who could give her that. Someone who would come and sweep her off her feet. That is what she wished for, and a girl should never give up on her dreams and wishes because they can come true.

Kara's mind focused in on what her friends were say and she listened intently  as she participated in the conversation.  She was visiting with her best friend Chenelle Kirkland better known as Chey, along with several of their other friends in the San Francisco Crew; Diamond Mc.Cloud, Brittney Payne, Desaray Bronson, Raven Garrett, Paris Mc.Claine, Shenayle Torres b.k.a. Prie Prie, and Chanelle Briscoe b.k.a. Keisha.

The women were sitting around Chey's living room in her ten room, two bedroom, Tudor style house that she shared with her boyfriend Chris Martin. They were just hanging out and talking.

The women were there because they had been a little concerned about Chey. She had not been feeling so good lately. Chey was showing all of the signs of early pregnancy and they were wondering if she was going to make it to the Valentine's Day party the Crew had planned for Saturday.

"Chey, are you sure you are going to feel up to going to the Valentine's Day party Saturday at Lucky's Night Club?" LaKara asked. She was concerned that Chey might not feel well again and would not be able to go.

That was a no brainer for Chey. Of course she was still going! The Valentine's Day bash was something that the San Francisco Crew had been planning for months. It was going to be a "couples only" party especially for them to dance and get their romance on. Their friend Kaleb Price's older brother was nice enough to let them use his club called "Lucky's". Everybody was looking forward to this party including Chey herself.

"Are you kidding?" Chey exclaimed. "I wouldn't miss this party if I was sick with a 102 degree temperature and I couldn't do anything but sit in a chair all night long bundled up in my coat, popping Tylenols, drinking Ginger Ale, and I couldn't do anything but watch you all dance. All of our friends will be there."

"I was thinking about not going myself." Kara announced.

It was like a bombshell went off. All eight of her friends looked at her in surprise.

"Why?" Asked Paris.

"It's a Valentine's Day party. All of you will be there with a date. I won't. Donnie and I just broke up about two weeks ago." LaKara explained.

The girls all frowned at the mention of his name. None of them liked Kara's ex-boyfriend Donnie Caruso. He was a street thug who treated Kara terribly during their brief relationship.

"He was a complete jerk!" Said Keisha distastefully. "The guys wanted to kick his ass. The only reason why they put up with him at all was for your sake."

"I know." Said Kara wistfully. "But the point is everybody at that party will be coupled off except for me. I'll feel like the oddball."

Kara was a beautiful, mixed race Italian, African, and Native American woman. She was about 5'6" tall, and medium weight. She had exotic good looks, and shoulder length wavy black hair. She had beautiful almond shaped brown eyes, a cute little nose, full lips, and a beautiful smile. She had an athletic build, and a nice shapely figure, something that most women would die for.

She was what most men would consider as sexy. She had no problem attracting men. Lord knows she had attracted plenty of them since she was 12 years old. But she felt that it was too close to the night of the party to try to get a date now, and she didn't want to go alone. She would rather stay at home and curl up with a good romance novel.

"Kara, you can't miss this party." Chey said worried. "Everybody will be there. We'll all be looking for you to be there too. We're your friends. You know we don't care if you have a date or not. Chris and them will dance with you. You know Kris M, and Sage D aren't going to let you just sit there at the table all night."

Kara smiled.

"That's all good, and I know that any one of the guys would come and get me up out of my seat to dance, but it's a "couples only" party. Everyone will be cuddled up with their men getting their romance on except for me. I would still be feeling all alone or like a fifth wheel even though I am among a ton of my friends." She said.

"The way that men go crazy over you, can't you get a date for just that one night?" Diamond asked.

She knew that Kara was capable of getting a man just like that if she wanted to.

"I could try, but I doubt it, and I don't want to just pick up some random guy off the streets. Besides, all of the men that I know or associate with are your men. The only other men that I know are my own brothers, L.J., Mike, Timmy, Kris, Dylan, and Shaun, and I can't romance them." Kara said.

"Why don't you try an escort service just for Saturday night?" Raven suggested. She was trying to think of some way to help Kara get a date for the dance.

"I don't know Raven. That's not something that I'm into." LaKara said. She wasn't that desperate.

"You can have my brother Bryan." Chey said jokingly.

The other girls laughed. They all knew that the handsome, debonair, Bryan Kirkland was already spoken for.

"I would love to have your brother Bryan." LaKara grinned. "Unfortunately, he already has a woman, and I don't think she is the type to share."

At that moment, they heard Chey's doorbell ring.

"Hold that thought. Somebody is at my door." Chey said.

"Who is it?" She asked.

"Hey Chey. It's me India, and Tay Tay, and Cookie." Chey heard India's voice come through the door.

She peeped out of the little square window and saw the three women India, Tay Tay, and Cookie standing on her porch. Chey opened the door and let her three friends India Barnes, Chenelle Benton b.k.a. Tay Tay, and Shenayle Peyton b.k.a. Cookie in.

"Hey India, Tay Tay, and Cookie." Chey greeted her friends.

"What's up?" The three young women spoke, and they each gave her a hug as they came in.

"What's up?" The other girls who were already there greeted them.

"What's up?" The ladies spoke again.

"What are you all doing?" Asked Tay Tay.

"Nothing, just kicking back with Chey until about 3:00 ." Desaray answered her.

"That's what we came to do." Said Cookie.

"We're all staying home on Saturday so that we can get all of our chores out of the way and get dinner done early and get ready for the party Saturday night." Said Prie Prie.

"I know that's right." Said Cookie. "I always look forward to these parties on Christmas, New Years Eve, and Valentine's Day. It's one of the few times that we can all get together and party since we're not longer in High School."

"Everybody is looking forward to going to this party except for Kara." Desaray told them.

The three women India, Tay Tay, and Cookie all turned to look at Kara surprised to hear that she didn't want to go to the party.

"Why don't you want to go Kara?" Tay Tay asked.

"It's no big deal, you all. I was just thinking about skipping the party because it's a Valentine's Day party and everybody will be coupled off except for me. All of my friends will be there all wrapped up in their men's arms, getting their romance on and dancing and stuff. And I'll be the only one there without a date since I broke up with Donnie and I haven't been dating anyone since then. That's what I was telling them just before you came in." Kara explained.

"You don't know anybody that you could ask out?" India asked the same question as Diamond did.

"No." Kara answered.

"I suggested an escort service." Raven still hadn't given up on her idea.

"I'd rather not." Said Kara adamantly.

"We'll leave that as a last minute resort, but don't close your mind to the idea completely Kara." Tay Tay suggested. "We want you to come to the party."

"I know." Said Kara.

She understood what her friends were trying to do and why. And she loved them for it. But she just wasn't up to dating some strange man whom she did not know anything about right now.

"We've got until 7:00 p.m. Saturday. We'll think of something by then." Said Chey.

She wasn't giving up yet. Kara was her best friend. The party just would not be the same without her being there. She was determined to find her a date some way some how. She just hadn't figured it out yet, but she would. She didn't Ki now that her prayers would be answered in the most unlikely way, and much sooner than she thought.

"Yeah, don't worry. We'll hook you up with a date." Agreed Cookie. "You're a pretty attractive woman, you're not exactly dog meat."

Kara looked at her.

"Thanks a lot Cookie." She said in a whimsical manner.

"You know what I mean." Said Cookie.

Cookie was not trying to insult Kara. Kara was her girl. She only meant that Kara was by no means an ugly girl. She knew just the same as the other girls that Kara waws a natural beauty, and that she had the ability to get any man that she wanted when she put her mind to it.

"Come on Kara, you've got to know some other men besides our men and brothers." Said Brittney.

"No, not really." Said LaKara. "I know a few men at work but most of them are married or involved with somebody else, female or male. A few of them I just plain don't like or woouldn't consider dating anyway. The most men that I know are in the Bay Area Crew. Your brothers, your boyfriends, and your husbands." She'd made her point.

"Like we said, we'll work on it." Said Tay Tay. "We'll get you a date."

Kara looked at each one of her friends.

"You all are very determined aren't you?" She said.

"Yes we are." Chey told her. "Nobody wants you to miss the party."

"It will just be nice to hang around with the whole Crew again." Said Desaray feeling nostalgic.

"It sure will." Said Diamond. "We don't have a lot of time to do that anymore. We are all so busy working or taking care of our families. It's not like it was back in High School when we all used to gather at the back of the lunch room and the men used to come up to the school and eat lunch with us."

"Girls used to be so jealous of us." Said Keisha.

"Didn't they?" Said Tay Tay. "Especially Janeen Thourgood and Stephanie Hollander." Those names were a blast from the past.

"That group lived to give us hell." Brittney said.

"It's funny that everybody was there except for Chey and Kara." Prie Prie said remembering those fun times.

"Yeah, I was living in New York at the time. Then we moved briefly to Huntington Beach, CA. Then two years later we moved here." Said Chey.

"I was living in Miami, Florida until five years ago. Then we moved to San Jose, CA for a year, then we moved here." Said Kara.

She wished she did know this Crew back when she was still in High School. They were the best group of friends that she ever had in her life. She would have loved to been running the halls, eating lunch with them, and sharing in all of their misadventures.

"When I was living in New York, the love of my life was a guy named Michael Stevenson, or Mike." Chey reminisced. "Then we moved to Southern California and I met and fell in love with Anthony Garrison or Tony as you all know him. I've told you stories about both of them. Now the love of my life is Chris Martin."

"Do you think Chris is the one?" Cookie asked wondering if Chey and Chris were going to get married soon like so many of their other friends were doing.

"You mean do I think Chris and I will eventually get married?" Chey hit the nail right on the head.

"Yeah." Said Cookie.

"In my honest opinion, yes." Chey answered. "I believe with all of my heart that Chris is the one I will marry. He loves me completely and I feel the same way about him. We live together and we get along pretty good. Like all couples we have our ups and downs and we get on each other's nerve occasionally, but we always work things out. He hasn't said in so many words that he's ready to get married yet, but I believe that's the direction our relationship is headed."

"Then we should have another wedding to attend this summer besides mine and Phillip's." Diamond quipped, talking about her fiancé Phillip Garrett.

"And mine and Joey's" Brittney added talking about her fiancé Joey Campbell.

"Okay you all, slow down. Don't go making any wedding plans for me yet. I haven't be asked, and even if he asked me today, I still might need more time than four months to plan the perfect wedding, especially since I have so many people to invite." Chey told them.

She didn't know just how true those words would become.

"What about you Kara?" India asked.

"Me? I am not in love with anybody right now. I'm happy to be free of Donnie." She said.

"We know that." Said Tay Tay. "She meant who were some of the great loves in your life? And please, don't mention that jerk Donnie. He don't count."

"When I was in Miami, my first love was a boy named Joey Morgan. He was a real cutie, tall, athletic, light skinned, curly hair, and very sweet. He sort of reminded me of Michael Jackson a little bit, only he was lighter in complexion and had a deeper voice than Michael. He used to sing in the glee club. I was crazy about him. We had a lot of fun together, but we eventually drifted apart. His family moved to Atlanta, Georgia.

"After he left, I fell for another guy who was a friend of mine actually, and he lived right up the street from me. His name was Vincent Mc.Guire. He was tall and handsome too. He was brown skinned, and athletically built . He mostly ran track in school, but he also sang in the choir and loved music. I really didn't know that he had a crush on me until he kissed me one day when we were alone in the music room. We would be practicing songs and stuff and he would play the piano while I sang. He was kind of shy and very nice. That's the only thing about him that reminds me of Michael Jackson, that and his smile. He had a beautiful smile. In fact, he is a Virgo just like him too. Anyway, he was a couple of years older than me and I attended his Prom with him. Vince moved away to Texas after that, just like Joey. I never saw him again either.

"Then, I met a guy named Johnny Thompson, or J.T. Thompson. He was a handsome guy goo, medium height, brown skinned, and sexy. He was doing good going to college and taking classes to be an Accountant, but he was a bit of a musician too. He played the keyboards for a local band but he got mixed up in something bad with a couple of his hoodlum friends and ended up going to jail. I moved to California after that, so I never saw him again either.

"My last real love was a guy named Tyler Joseph Dennison, or T.J.  I tend to fall in love with the pretty boys and the boys who were into the music scene." Kara laughed to herself.

Even Donnie was into the Rap and Hip-Hop game, mixing and scratching and all that, but she wouldn't bring that up right now.

"T.J. was very good looking, sexy, and he was a musician. He sang with a boy band. I don't know if you all ever heard of the group "Triple Threat". They had a little minor success."

"No." The girls answered.

"I have." Said Chey. "I have connections in Show Business so I hear about a lot of up and coming new artists and bands. I have famous friends, and friends who are musicians and producers as well as aspiring actors."

"I never knew that about you." Said Brittney.

"I don't mention it that much. You would be surprised who all I know and who some of my family and friends work with or work for. I have heard of Triple Threat, and I know who T.J. Dennison is. I don't know him personally, but I know of him and I've heard Kara speak of him."

"Yeah, I used to do some background vocals for him and stuff in the studio. We had a great relationship, and we had a lot of fun together. I will never forget the time that he climbed through my bedroom window to be with me. My father walked in and caught us together and he had a fill. He chased T.J. down the street half-naked with a gun." Kara laughed. "It was funny as hell. It wasn't funny at the time because I thought my Dad was actually going to shoot my boyfriend, but it's pretty comical now when I think about it."
