Steering a path through fear.

Courage

by Debbie D'Arcy

I used  to think a brave man would
be tough inside, not shed a tear.
But then, with time, I understood
that courage grows from conqu'ring fear.

This noble skill comes not from birth;
in life that's charmed it won't appear.
Instead, in strife, it shows its worth
that courage grows from conqu'ring fear.

So, thus, in woes we need to see
the value of the path we steer
and then, with trust in faith, agree
that courage grows from conqu'ring fear.

This verse is a tribute to those who are struggling through, for example, illness, grief, loss, domestic violence and other trauma.

Courage can take many forms. Only too often we tend to associate it with wartime heroes or the, reportedly, 'fearless.' But, of course its potential belongs to us all, although not in a ready made package or an accident of birth. It comes from being able to triumph over the sort of fears that we all have in common. If we haven't been challenged in life by adversity, we can never really know how brave and resilient we can truly be.
