Early Spring Ground

by Rob Maxey

The birds are all back, in the yard and the trees
As Spring sends its welcome with a warm then cool breeze
The past winter still clings before sunrise each morn
By noon the new spring is alive, a newborn.

The daffodils yellow swaying in time
With the song of new birds, new fruit on the vine
Grandma's flower boxes are lined on the porch
With velvety colors burning bright like a torch.

The tender green sprouts of new grass on the lawn
Before the first cutting, it won't be very long
When the lightning will strike, and the rains pour down
On the softened and warming early spring ground.
