The Mountain

by Andrew Cloward

High atop the mountain stands a prize we cannot see,

a joy we can’t yet feel,

and a fate we shouldn’t flee.

High atop the mountain stands a view that we must reach,

so we’ll see in the climb

there was a reason for our feats.

~

Down beneath the valley lies a low we can’t avoid,

a voice we can’t not hear,

and a goodness that’s devoid.

Down beneath the valley lies a burden that we hide,

one we place upon ourselves,

and one that stays inside.

~

High within the atmosphere there are clouds we can’t see through,

clouds we wish there weren’t,

and clouds we cannot shoo.

High within the atmosphere there’s a covering we don’t wear,

but one that rests upon our heads-

a blindness we must share.

~

All along the trail there are climbers just like you,

cliffs they can’t look past,

and a lot that is untrue.

All along the trail you can’t help but fear the fall,

you can’t help but hear those climbers,

who say it’s not worth it after all.

~

Above it all there stands a God, the Being who designed our trail,

who sees how hard we try,

and who loves us when we fail.

Above it all there stands my Father who wants me to succeed,

but I’m afraid to try;

sometimes I don’t believe.

~

Below it all there is His Son who laid his life down just for me,

who knows each step I take

because he’s walked on stormy seas.

Below it all He is my hope, that someday I’ll reach the top,

for no matter how often I roll back down,

he’s at the bottom to help me stop.

~

Within my heart I hold a seed, a future plan I want to grow,

it represents the things I want,

and the things I don’t yet know.

Within my heart I’m willing to believe, even with the many scars:

that I didn’t come this far,

to only come this far.

A Milestone Post

Years ago, one of my best friends called me from the hospital after attempting to take his life. I wrote this poem that same day and it is dedicated to him and all others who have fallen down the trail and had to start again.
