Ask a teenager to explain.
Isn't it obvious?

The speaker planned to address a group of hearing impaired at her lecture. She had worked hard to master signing. Before going on stage, she decided to practice in the restroom mirror.
While using the gestures, a group of teenage girls entered. She heard them giggling in the background.
One girl whispered to her friend, “What is she doing?”
The other responded, “That’s sign language. She can’t hear, so that's how she talks to herself.”
