How did your parents come up with your name?
Sherika
by Mike Grimes
My name is Sherika.
It sounds like a beautiful African name.
It's not, although my parents are African-American.
Some people call me Share-icca.
Some people call me She-reeka.
It's actually pronounced Cher-eeka.
When I was born, my parents struggled to name me. They decided to compromise and combine both of their favorite names into one majestic declaration.
My mother was a huge Cher fan. My father sold Eureka vacuum cleaners.
Cher
Eka.
Now you know.
