Monsters Still Exist

by Claire Tennant

In a bygone era, I dreamt of monsters
they hid behind the bedroom drapes
whenever I woke up crying
there was little or no escape
my screams were heard in the block of flats
the neighbours showed concern
when mummy came the monsters flew like bats
she pulled the drapes over them

I never watched TV programs
like the Addams family
If there were drapes, there would be no escape
for a little girl like me
monsters came in the form of children
who loved to laugh and tease
all I wanted was my Mummy
would someone call her please?

I had forgotten until recently
that humans were monsters, too
until the day an older man
with little else to do
picked a fight with my darling
in the shopping mall
the monster lacked height
my darling is tall

there he was, barging
in front of us in the queue
ready to make the giant
into human stew
suddenly, there was a voice
it sounded very Scottish
"Get off my husband now"
it also sounded waspish

Does this make me a monster
or just a silly old bat?
please don't send me behind the drapes
I've had enough of that!
