Light Through a Window

by Heather Bagley

There's not much of it. A far-off streetlamp combined with my genetically superior night vision gives me just enough light to see the shapes that comprise my room. No shadows, no highlights, just shapes.
It's the sort of step-above-darkness light that plays to your imagination. Where if you squint the right way, you can see anything.
The house creaks and talks to you in a way that's too at odds with the urban sound of distant cars. The air carries sleepiness incarnate. It feels as though the whole world sleeps and you're the only one awake to enjoy it this way.
Logic nags at you, insisting that's impossible. You push it away, relishing in squinting into the semi-darkness portal.
Your creativity vibrates and you hurriedly turn the lamp on to document these visions, but its harshness shatters it. So you turn it back off, content to snuggle in your blankets and watch
Visions bleed into dreams and too soon you're awake again. Your grand ideas have fled at the presence of brightness. All that's left is a dull sense you're forgetting something. Thus, the cycle continues.
All because some far-off streetlamp illuminated your room just enough to walk through worlds.

The Many Masks We Wear contest entry

Sometimes, I am really not a fan of word count restrictions. I had to get rid of 33 words in this, and though that may not seem like much, every removal of a word felt like a chip to my soul.
Anyway, enough with my dramatics, this piece I wrote in the middle of the night before my sister's wedding in an AirBnB. The prompt was "describe the light coming through your window."
