Still in my mind ...
Unforgettable Memory

I sat alone, reflecting, on a hill overlooking a beautiful, almost deserted beach – golden sands, blue sparkling water, and a nearly cloudless sky.
A couple of swimmers out in very deep water, two tiny black dots bobbing rhythmically, caught my eye. I idly watched them, wishing I too was a strong swimmer.
A few minutes later I saw just one dot. Surely I was mistaken. The other must be there!
Yet he remained out of sight.
What could I do? There was not a soul nearby to help.
The following day I learned a swimmer had drowned at that beach.

I always felt guilty for just sitting there helplessly, but the two were probably at least two hundred metres off-shore, and there was no one else in sight to call upon. The beach was not patrolled by life-savers, and of course that was well before the time of mobile phones. I could not swim very well; certainly I could not swim that distance to offer help.
