100-word story about being a tour guide.
Paying Attention
by LisaMay
I felt self-conscious and disconcerted by the man's undivided attention, but I maintained my poise and continued my commentary.
He stood in front of me, too close for comfort. Whenever I stepped back to preserve my personal space he stepped forward again, staring at my lips intently. Was he about to leap forward and plant a kiss on me?
Back at reception at the end of the tour, he spoke awkwardly to me: "You're a good tour guide. Thank you for speaking clearly. I was lip reading. I'm deaf."
I wished he'd told me at the beginning of the tour!
