A poetic version of the myth of Arachne

The Myth of Arachne

by Heather Bagley

Don’t let the gods fool you

They’re not as good as they seem

Allow me to tell you a story

Of what they did to me

I was beautiful and talented

T’was alluring tapestries I wove

To match the skill of Athena

Was the goal towards which I strove

My success bled straight to my head

And I’ll admit I grew a tad proud

But how could I not when praise and shouts

Arose from a gathering crowd?

My craft had been unmatched, unchallenged

Until the voice of a withered old lady

Invited me to, in contest, face her

On that gods-forsaken day

I took one look at her gnarled hands

Laughed and accepted the offer

She smiled at me, and to Athena

Her body then transformed

I painted with a thread and loom

A portrait of gods’ impurities

The drunken, raving, advantage-taking

Rulers of skies and seas

On her blank stringed fabric canvas

The goddess wove the contrary

The golden generosity

Of their pantheonic glory

When presenting to our audience

They found they could not choose

Each tapestry was beautiful

No one could win or lose

Athena’s fury burned in her eyes

“You shall be punished for you pride

A horrid, ugly, wicked beast

You’ll be forever brushed aside.”

Now listen, sons and daughters

Before you spin your web

My mission for you is simple

All Athena’s children, dead
