We Still Have Tonight

by Gypsy Blue Rose

For the broken people

one last night

of making love

the way only you could —

in the morning

you’ll be gone

but we still have tonight

the summer eve breeze

makes itself at home

sneaking through

the open door

tossing your messy hair

but we still have tonight

a veil of jasmine scent

covers our bared skins

entwined with our smell

of lemon and lavender

of amber and musk

but we still have tonight

in the silver moonlight

your sienna eyes shine

with speckles of stars

and I get lost in your sky

miles away from home

but we still have tonight

your mouth tastes

   like chocolate-covered berries —

your kisses are so sweet

I never want to stop

kissing you

but we still have tonight

only the Nigel bird

knows my loneliness

as I hear his melancholic song

my heart yearns for us

and I don't want to say goodbye

but we still have tonight

Recognized

Nigel is the only New Zealand gannet bird of its kind. He died this week surrounded by 80 concrete birds. The decoy figures were originally placed on the island to lure more gannets to the island but ended up as the lonely bird's only companions.

The bird lived on Mana Island for almost three years and spent every one of those years trying to win the affection of the inanimate fake birds placed there by conservationists in an effort to repopulate the island. Nigel hoped to win the friendship of all the fake birds on the island, but there was one particular fake bird that truly won his heart, his concrete sweetheart. Nigel spent years completing mating rituals in order to win over his lover. He even built a nest for her and tried his best to groom her. Nigel never did woo his stone lover and his dead body was found next to her.
