My Piggy

by HarryT

When I was four, I received my prize
My Piggy Bank, with pink ears and
Mary and her lamb on both sides
I filled her with money saved and earned

My heart swelled with glee when
I dropped coins through Piggy’s slot
Saving for the special thing I'd buy
After collecting enough in her belly

Now I am old, and my Piggy is too
She sits upon my bookcase shelf
With a note that she will go to
My daughter when I’m through

When I gaze at Piggy, she reminds me
Of my young years with my brother
The fun we had growing up and
Now that he’s gone, feeling the sad

I emptied her belly a long time ago
But I kept Piggy safe all these years
Because my little Piggy is more than
Just an unpretentious ceramic animal…

I’m so pleased that my daughter
Will take Piggy, I know she cares
When she looks at Piggy...
She says she will think of me
