Musophobia

by Lyle Nußbaum

I visibly shudder when I think about
The terror that confronted Winston in Room 101:
The small, beady eyes, black as the abyss;
Gnawing teeth, constantly chewing, consuming;
With human-like fingers splayed on their paws.

The Devil's lap dog, appropriately named,
Which carried the fleas, spreading Black Plague.
Quickly breeding, multiplying into multitudes,
The hairless tails, naked and serpentine,
Entwining, entangled into revolting rat kings.

On the family farm, an ever-present possibility
To be found feeding in the dog food bag or cattle's grain.
My breath stills at the sickening sight of a solitary rat
Scurrying to the depths of it's dark, labyrinthine lair.
The conception of my fear, now deeply ingrained.
