For animal lovers
Hollow Words
I’m off to puppy school today,
to meet my friends; to romp and play.
A "good boy", that is what I am,
and if I pass my last exam,
in my new vest, I'll look so fine;
the letters read “Bomb Squad K9”.
A "sacrifice" we don't find odd?
Just who declared us humans God?
A truck ride? No, I think I’ll pass;
I’m quite enjoying munching grass.
It's lovely out here in the sun,
I'd say my life's a lucky one.
A sale today? Then off we go;
it’s cramped in here, so take it slow.
So you love cows? Well that's just great—
then what’s one doing on your plate?
This racing gig is so much fun,
six races now that I have won.
My owner’s rich because of me...
oh bother, look, I've hurt my knee;
so I’ll just lie here in the sun...
Wait! What's he doing with that gun?
If racing horses is your game,
it's you, and not the horse, who's lame.
If you think all life's made for you,
it may be time to change your view.
We don't destroy the ones we love,
so show compassion, rise above.

We don't have to personally inflict pain, suffering and death to be the cause of such misery. Paying others to do it for us, for our enjoyment or benefit, is still betrayal.
How willing we are as a species, and as individuals, to ignore the harm we do.
