The Village Store

by Barry Penfold

You can buy a set of saucepans
And fresh ground coffee beans
Some liquid soap for washing up
Or a pair of ladies jeans

Cigarettes or tobacco
And tins of menthol snuff
Crayons, chalks and drawing books
Lipsticks, creams, a powder puff.

Jars of pickles-sides of bacon
Pots of strawberry jam
Herbs and spices
Brawns and fresh cured ham

Tea from China and Ceylon
Hot sauces, cheddar cheese
Cocoa, chocolates, sausage rolls
And honey from the bees.

Drawing pins and olive oil
And lotions for all kind of ills
Hair conditioner, brush and combs
Packets of bandages and various pills

Jelly babies, aniseed balls
Pencils, pens and papers
Wax for floors and footwear
Matches, candles and tapers.

Biscuits, buns and loaves of bread
Walnut and date cakes
Hammers, nails, screws and hooks
Clothes pegs and garden rakes.

Today, tomorrow, every day
One thing is for sure
That almost everything you need
Is at the village store.

Recognized

For many years I lived in a fishing village and the village store was our source of nearly everything. Unfortunately, many are now gone.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
