A Memorial Day Poem

Old Glory

by Lyle Nußbaum

The soldier would think back to when he was a boy,
When saying the pledge made his heart swell with joy.
Now he was a man and fought for the red, white, and blue
Risking his health and future to protect me and you.
On the bloody field of battle, he saw dear comrades fall
But carried on for freedom, in spite of it all.
One day, the enemy suddenly attacked;
They were surrounded: the sides, front, and back.
Then the sky opened up and it began to rain.
The sound of the drizzling mingled with shots, screams of pain.
As he crawled through the mud, he received a mortal wound
And looking at his gaping chest, knew he would die soon.
In his last moments, his life flashed before his eyes;
He took his last rasping breath, fell still, and died.
And when his body was taken home to his wife
Over the casket was draped the Stars and the Stripes.
