Visiting Grandma And Grandpa

by pookietoo

Ten-year old Louise loved visiting her grandma, Charlotte, who was an angel to her. She lived three hours away from her which wasn't far, but she only got to visit her three times a year. She always hugged Louise whenever she saw her and very sweetly kissed her on her cheek. She had a smile in her heart and in her voice. She played her favorite songs for Louise and held both her hands while they sang and danced to the music.

Louise's grandma also played the piano for her, and they both sang the songs together. Louise thought she had the prettiest voice, just like her mother did. She told her many stories about when she was growing up and read Louise's favorite books to her. She always looked immaculate and kept her house that way. She could picture in her mind her grandma whistling when she worked.

Her grandma had the most beautiful flower garden she had ever seen. Her favorite flowers were tulips and roses, just like Louise's were. Each time she visited her grandma, she was crocheting something either for her house or one of her grandchildren. On this particular visit, she taught her how to make a bookmark which she would treasure forever. She shared a special love with her grandma, a bond they would never break. She knew how to make Louise feel special in every way. She always looked forward to visiting her grandma and wanted to grow up to be like her.

But on the other hand, her grandpa, Charlie, had a scowl on his face whenever she saw him. Not once did she see him smile He welcomed her to their house and gave her a little hug but always seemed grumpy and aloof. Not one time did he tell Louise he loved her. He had a hard time looking in her eyes. This made her feel very sad and somewhat bitter towards him. He wore dirty overalls, and he complained about life in general. He could find nothing to be happy about. He would not let Louise climb on his knees or share any stories about when he was growing up.

He had a hard time showing any kind of love. Louise thought that he must have had a hard life growing up and couldn't think of any bright moments to share. Maybe his dad abused him, and his parents didn't do any fun things with him. She knew he had fought in World War 2 and suffered many battle scars like her dad did.

Finally Louise begged him to let her sit by him while she held his calloused hands. She told him she wished she could sit on his knees and hear him him tell her he loved her. She felt one day he would say those words. Her grandpa was totally different than her dad was. Still, she told him she loved him for who he was.and hoped that one day he would change his attitude about life. It was hard seeing her grandpa this way. Her heart ached for him.
