a one-hundred-word story
Protection
by Bill Schott
The Witness Protection Program had worked out well for Connor, who was now known as Ralph.
It was cool that after a career as an enforcer for organized crime, he could live safely in the suburbs. Of course, the government didn't know about all his killings; just the dozen ordered by the bosses.
Hearing the doorbell, Connor found his neighbor just outside.
“Hey Max! What’s up?”
“Hi, Ralph. Have you seen Richard?”
“You bet. He’s in the back room.”
Max followed Ralph to the rear of the house. Both men had knives; both ready to kill the other.
One succeeded.
