Race to the finish

She was ready and excited.
She’d prepared well and was pleased to be off to a good start.
She enjoyed the feeling, hoping to last the distance.
She remained alert but noticed others catching up. Surely she would not be overtaken! No, she was still slightly ahead.
Keep going, she breathed. How much longer? Reflecting on her preparations, she knew she couldn’t have given more. She’d done a lot of practice events and knew the strength of the opposition. Rivals, and yet friends. She just needed to hang on. A race? Sort of. Readers were voting in a prose contest….
