Nineteen forty two, pa was thirteen as he said his farewells to family and valley.
Destination: seminary on Lake Como.
There the Catholic Church corrupted young minds with beliefs that women were the gateway to hell and the source of all evils. Students showered once a year just before they were sent home for Christmas with duly shaved heads. Mornings,they had a basin with water to rinse face and feet which in winter froze on top. Food was scarce, pa was sickly and that was his "salvation " . He had a nerves breakdown at nineteen and never took his vows. 100 Word Flash writing prompt entry
Whenever I look at this pic, I realise pa's teenhood was traumatic.

and 2 member cents. Six years of that twisted thinking is not healthy for the mind, body and soul. In part thinking to be good Catholics and in part it meant one mouth less to provide for, pa s parents, mountain folk, send the oldest of their three sons to study and become a priest. The long dormitories were humid and damp and there was only one latrine ( a grimy hole) for more than 100 students. Like I said there was little food .. his best friend Constantino ( their beds were next to each other) his relatives had a factory of lollies .. when he would receive a packet by post he would share them with my father. Constantino became a secretary to a bishop. I met him a couple of times .. he had a friendly disposition. Another instead who came to visit, was just a priest, he was straight-out spooky.
