Why do squirrels have to be bullies?

A Fearful Chipmunk

by HarryT

I must tell you; I have grown to really dislike the Mister Squirrels,
Who live high in the branches of a big old maple tree.
You see, all the other animals who inhabit our yard, including
Two little rabbits, the yard owner named Cuff and Link
Mr. Cardinal and his wife, an occasional robin or two
The Sparrow and Wren families and me, Jerry Chipmunk
Gather to share our morning meal of bread and seeds,
Which the kind owner spreads for us every day.

However, there is a problem, it being the selfish squirrels.
They clamber down the trunk of the big old maple tree,
Squeaking and barking, warning us to get away from
Food they consider their exclusive breakfast spread.

The birds take flight; the rabbits hide under the bushes.
Myself, I back away and hide for the moment.
Conceal myself and wait for an opportune time, when the
Villains are sitting upright on their haunches, chomping away.
When they’re not looking, I sprint, grab a morsel of bread,
Return to my hiding place and munch away. However, the
Birds and Cuff and Link have to scatter and wait until these
Selfish, bushy-tailed bullies have eaten their fill.

I ask you, why can’t these stingy squirrels learn to be kind to others?
I’m fearful that our yard is becoming a microcosm of the human world.
