A Memorial Day Poem

We Honor the Fallen

by JLR

We celebrate Memorial Day
To honor those who died in fray,
Defending freedom and our land
With courage, honor, and command.

We lay some flowers on their graves,
And thank them for the lives they gave.
We salute their valiant deeds
And how they met our country’s needs.

We honor their self-sacrifice,
And how they paid the highest price.
We cherish their heroic name
And keep alive their glowing flame.

We celebrate Memorial Day,
To show our gratitude and say,
“You make us proud of what you’ve done,
And we are grateful, every one!”

Based on web search results, Memorial Day is a U.S. holiday that honors those who have died while serving in the American armed forces. It originated during the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. It was originally known as Decoration Day and was established by the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans, in 1868. It became an official federal holiday in 1971 and is observed on the last Monday of May.
