Abecedarian Poem

The Final Battle

by Lyle Nußbaum

Abecdarian Poem Contest Winner
Archelaus arrogantly ambles into the amphitheatre's arena
Battle-hardened, bloodthirsty, and brutal.
Citizens crowd into the Colosseum cheering the champion,
Desiring dangerous deeds and deadly displays,
Expecting to experience expert executions,
Fierce fights for freedom: the fortunate flourishing, the feeble falling in failure.
Gladiators grappling, gouging, gashing, goring; ghastly glitz and glamour.
Helmeted head held high, he hoists his halberd to hail the huge host.
Infidels, the incarcerated, including the innocent, incur his inescapable ire.
Julian jogs in, jubilantly jabbing His Jovian javelin,
Keen to knockoff the killer kingpin,
Longing for laud, looking to land on a legendary level.
Many mighty men met the Macedonian in murderous melee,
Ninety-nine notorious nemeses nudged into the netherworld
Only one obtrusive opponent obliged to obliterate.
Physically and pyschologically prepared, the participants play their parts.
Quick to the quarrel, no quailing or quavering, no quitting, no quarter.
Rough, rapid, repetitive raps rain ruthlessly,
Spears stabbing, slicing; shields sustaining shattering shocks.
Two terrible twins in tenacity tied
Until the underdog is undone by the undefeated.
Victorious, the victor vanquishes his victim.
Wielding the wooden weapon won,
Xiphoid rudis exhibited, exultantly
Yipping and yowling, yelling
Zealously for Zeus.
