A stroke victim's perspective.

Forsaken

by Elizabeth Henderson

The quiet darkness of Brian's bedroom doesn't provide tranquility to his shattered brain. Unfortunately, when his brain splintered, it left shards of random thoughts everywhere. He cannot sweep them into a neat little pile and toss them away. No, the ideas compete in his brain on the Indy 500 thought track. His family and friends deserted him when his brain imploded. Loneliness and abandonment are racing right now. In the darkened stillness of midnight delirium, abandonment is winning this race.

80 Word Flash Fiction contest entry

My daughter experienced a brain aneurysm and stroke at the age of 29. Her husband and most friends abandoned her, as often happens to people with brain injuries. I wrote this flash fiction after spending 30 days with all the folks in the hospital with brain injuries. I imagine this is how they felt in the hospital. Brian is fictional, but this story is all too real for the people who survive brain injuries.
