Heather Forgotten

by Heather Knight

I'm sitting at the edge of the abyss,
staring down at the roaring river below.
Behind me there are purple hills
showing off their heather gowns.
The sky is the colour of dusk
and the moon is making a shy appearance
behind the firs and the oaks.
I wonder how I got here,
what happened to my once cheerful limbs.
Now I feel heavy, leaden
just like a rock.
Maybe like a rock I will roll down the cliff
and the silver water will welcome me.
Then I'll be a mermaid with a shiny tail
and beautiful shells adorning my neck.
But perhaps the river will swallow me.
It will be as if
I had
never
been
born.
