Pearl Harbor and Beyond

by HarryT

I was still a babe in my crib
When the “Day of Infamy” occurred
But as I grew, I could feel how this
Dastardly day affected our family
All my uncles volunteered or were drafted
My aunts seemed always a bit on edge
Mom said we were lucky, my dad
Didn’t have to go because he was 2A
A national defense plant worker

My uncles all came back, only one was
Wounded at the Battle of the Bulge
Two flew with the Army Airforce
My youngest uncle, Stan, volunteered
For the Navy at seventeen and
Was a radioman on a troopship when
Atomic bombs were dropped on Japan

He had the pleasure of notifying the Captain
That their ship was ordered back to Pearl Harbor
Uncle Stan said it was the happiest day of his life.
And he always kept President Truman in his prayers
For making the very difficult decision that...
"Thank God, ended the war."
