Can't Take My Eyes Off You
Sally's Jukebox Hits #44
by Sally Law
Welcome to my Jukebox Hits! I'm counting down my favorites from 50 to 1! Thank you for joining me.
June is twofer month; same song, two performances. Think of it as a double scoop of your favorite ice cream.
At #44 is "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
The first YouTube video provided here seems to be the best audio recording I could find.
The second video features the song from the 2014 movie, "Jersey Boys." I'm telling you, it's a show stopping performance. A double treat for sure, and flashback to the best era in music, in my not-so-humble opinion. Yeah, it's gone to my head....
The group's members: Frankie Valli, Tommy DeVito, Bob Gaudio, and Nick Massi, sold over 100 million records woldwide between 1962 and 1978. O, what a foursome!
I'm glad to report that Frankie Valli (Frank Castelluccio) and Bob Gaudio are still with us. The group's mark is indelible, and their sound transcends time: Beggin', Big Girls Don't Cry, Can't Take My Eyes Off You, December '63, Let's Hang On, My Eyes Adored You, Rag Doll, Sherry, (Robert Zimmerman's favorite), and Walk Like A Man.
The group evolved since it's humble beginnings; known previously as The Four Lovers. Finally, after years of struggle, they took the name of the famous establishment that turned them down: The Four Seasons. The group also had a short go with the name: The Wonder Who.
Frankie Valli has a unique voice and range that seems to glide effortlessly from baritone to falsetto. At 87, I wondered if Frankie Valli had a favorite song. So far, I haven't discovered it. I'm finding it hard to choose myself.
When I play this song, I feel like a teenager again, thinking about the love of my life. I hope this takes you back, even if it's just for a moment. Enjoy your double scoop! Heck, Jersey Boys toured on Broadway too. Let's make it a triple scoop!
Before you leave, my friend and fellow FanStorian, Robert Zimmerman, met Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. No kidding! Read about it here: https://www.fanstory.com/displaystory.jsp?hd=1&id=964516
{Can't Take My Eyes Off You}
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you
You'd be like Heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much
At long last, love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you
Pardon the way that I stare
There's nothin' else to compare
The sight of you leaves me weak
There are no words left to speak
But if you feel like I feel
Please let me know that it's real
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you
I love you, baby
And if it's quite alright
I need you, baby
To warm the lonely night
I love you, baby
Trust in me when I say
Oh, pretty baby
Don't bring me down, I pray
Oh, pretty baby
Now that I've found you, stay
And let me love you, baby
Let me love you
You're just too good to be true
Can't...
Until next time....
