Before the storm

This is a well written poem about a walk in the calm before the storm. It seems like she is calming herself before her husband starts a storm inside the house. Maybe the calming walk gave the husband time to cool down and relax so calming one storm.
Good luck in poem of the month contest.

The walk outside also gave the husband a chance to go to bed, lol. Thank you so much!

Don't mention it, Carol.

Very good.
Yup, very good.
Now, please don't
take this wrong
when I say-
as I read this,
it...sounded like me writing.
And that...never happens.
Not because I am so wonderful=
just because no one writes like me,
nor do they want to.
Crying like driven nails.
Uh huh. Sure.
Just everybody writes
well enough to rip
emotion, feelings, images
out of you without regard
to your ability to contain them.
My, my, my.
How very nice.

Hi Doug, I must thank you for this very kind review, and if you say this writing reminds you of your own - I take that as a huge compliment. You have made my day :)

This is well-crafted, elegant, and spare writing. Every stanza is so strong I cannot even name a favorite one. The vocabulary is utterly comprehensible with words like water, grove, moon, storm, and such lines as a quiet pool reflecting green moss make this whole free verse poem a joy to read.

Thank you so very much for this wonderful review, I'm happy that you noticed the repeating theme of the water. It was meant to bring forth the peace that I often long for (when I stand outside at night after getting home from work).

Yes, the water came up in various forms. Very nice tie-in.

This is an incredible free verse and I don't say that lightly. Usually, when I think free verse, I think dull; put I in a paragraph and call it prose. So few people can pull it off well. This is an exception. Your verse is full of rich imagery, metaphor and depth. Very well done.

Debi, you are wonderful to go back and read my poem, I so appreciate it. I have myself suffered through poems that read like prose in our local open mikes. Worse yet when they throw in rhyme!! Anyway, thank you SO much :)

Hi Carol, I really liked this free verse poem about the old moon showing his face after the tempest of the storm. Your poem has such lovely imagery and rhythm. Ulla x

Seems at times that those arms that used to be a refuge are anything but... we sit and feel the air, the breeze, and covet it knowing we must walk inside and either brace for 'disagreement' or place that placidity of air around us like a cloak and walk through until the next time we can sit -- but where does the sadness and air find release? Loved this one, Carol, and I am sick for a sixer -- and I hope I didn't completely botch the interpretation, but, damn, my friend this one really hit home!! ;)
Thanx and not... but the offering is almost bewitching... :) Yvette

You got the interpretation just right. I guess I was able to pinpoint the feeling I had after getting home from work (weather forecasting) with a wind storm on the way, and a somewhat crabby husband in the house. I kind of played up the personal drama, but we've certainly had our moments over the years!
Thanks, Yvette :))

This is an excellent free verse, that is well done in the imagery department Carol, the Marvellous descriptions of the bitter, blowing wind is most illuminating my friend, although it's summer, and it's hard to imagine a cold wind, it's very beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

Hello Carol,
Wonderful imagery in this poem of the coming storm of nature, fate, of existence itself. The spaces between the words, the people, the moments, will fill with winds. Storms seek open spaces.
You have a gift with words, such gifts are augmented by emotion.
Storms are often followed by a soft warm moon and peaceful pool.
I wish you well.

Such tension in this poem. The calm before the storm is only peaceful when one doesn't know it's coming. You interlace the natural world and human relations with great skill. I read the final stanza as an image of enduring inner peace. The writer's only defence in the midst of turmoil.
Your free verse is conversational, intimate, shared from the heart. The imagery is vivid, you engage the senses of sight, sound, touch. Even the sixth sense.
Admirable work, Carol.

I'm a weather forecaster so I knew the storm was coming, even without stepping outside, lol. Thanks for the read and review!

The wording and the feeling are so you, they chill and amaze at the same time. Very well done free verse, a little dark and very descriptive. A feeling that some of us still share
