This is quite stark--bare and honest. You pull the reader into the victim's world. In third person you describe how she processes the "event," personalizing her reaction, thereby making it more relatable.

Your focus on the victim's struggle for normalcy post-assault accentuates the absolute evil of the crime of rape.

This is a wonderful piece of work. I absolutely love it. The way you made it simple but constantly intriguing and leading the reader into the journey. I definitely enjoyed reading this and thank you for sharing this part of you. Sometimes what we think is vulnerability, others may see as strength.

Wow, how powerful is this message. I have a loved one who has experienced this same thing as this woman in the writing. You have certainly reminded me that we are all, everyone of us, carrying our own burdens, even though we may portray as something/one else. It is something that we should never forget. Thank you for this..

This is a poignant poem about rape and its effect on its victim. It shows us the strength that is needed to get through the day and to get back to a semblance of what you were before the rape. It shows the lack of self confidence too.

Congrats on coming in second in the contest.

    Good morning Dragonpoet!

Wow, the response for this poem is overwhelming. I never thought it would go anywhere much less be nominated for POM. I am truly honored. I rarely write and post here anymore, so this was an even bigger surprise. I don?t know who the other nominees were except for the ones who placed. I had been on a much needed vacation last week and made a pact with myself and my family, we wouldn?t use the internet while away. It was very hard the first two days, but we did it! However, I never knew till early this week.

Again, a huge thank you. I am very honored.

Outstanding write! This is something that I have to say hit the very core of my existence. Ms. JLSavell, you have certainly deserved to be amongst the poem of the month winners! I know that sometimes more words get overlooked for 1st place finishes as well as these types of poems where it is a personal experience that maybe not everyone has experienced for themselves. I will say that the way this was written was gripping and I feel has drawn me to make sure you are on my reading radar over and over again. I will be sure to read you within the first few hours next week if there are any new offerings. That is usually when all my 6's fly. I give it my virtual Six. Cheers, Fonda

I hadn't seen this or I would have given it a vote. Such a beautiful, insightful revelation about the effects of this crime against women. I especially like the way you describe the self-consciousness of adjusting the collar, etc., gazing into the windows without feeling ugly, and the personal items as dignity, power, and grace. Well done.

Ah, goodness-ME, Jimi!
How can one's very heart help but feel ripped from their breast, with the sinking sensation that one so beautiful as You are, in all your sweet, giving, caring ways, should ever have experienced such life bending moments of sheer dread, knowing what's happening is not only hurting you physically, but spiritually, mentally, and emotionally -- stealing your innocence, your sense of security, and that naturally bright inner glow of happiness.
I can only place myself empathetically in your being to try and grasp, not only what it was doing to you in the moment, but afterward, and for a lifetime of remembering.
Having said all that, the fact that you can even think of writing this amazingly vivid, eye and heart-opening piece is undoubtable evidence your indomitable character's inner-strength has faced this almost unsurmountable challenge head-on and overcome (at least) the most debilitating and controlling aspects of this thoughtless, callous act of violence perpetrated upon the eloquently blessed person you surely were and are.
Ever-so humbly and adoringly, Dear Jimi, I bow to your amazing spirit and fortitude. You are my own true-life heroine ... not to mention the marvelous forethought, skill, insight, compassionate caring, effort, amazing metaphorical imagery, and poetic creativity put into composing this stellar Free Verse poem in master form; and, that picture ... whew, I'm completely gobsmacked!
Knowing Lady Jimi Savell, as I do (though, not about the incident), I knew full-well this was about You ... still, when you said, "Me, that is!" I felt you inside so very-very deeply and painfully, the tears just brimmed-over ... I know guys are supposed to be strong and not do this, but I want you to know I'm not one bit ashamed, because I'm sooo wonderfully proud of You! :D

Loads of love and joy to thee, our lovely lady faire ... thanks, Dear Jimi! ~ Richard : )

"She's the woman I want to have a glass of wine with,
celebrate her successes with a shopping spree,
or just hold her in a tight embrace" Ya got THAT right, Ma'am!!!

This poem is gripping and heart-wrenching, conveying the thoughts many rape victims surely have. In addition to the pain and shame, they realize
there are "silent assumptions" whirling all around.

You have very strong emotions throughout and tell a story that many can relate to, there is a strong sense of feeling locked inside and the desire to feel needed and accepted without condition, you express your feelings with strength and your emotions are felt from beginning to end, there is so much to bee seen within this and so much to be heard as well. In life we often see someone that holds great potential and longs for acceptance but has been mislead, tattered and torn down, often a sincere act of kindness, a simple genuine hello, a smile or a polite nod of the head can bring a glimpse of light into ones day, you have a wonderful write here and it is strong and emotional, nice job, Thank you for sharing,Mancub
