Your poem probably would give most kids a smattering of a culture very different from their own, and it gets you through another day of NaPoMo. By the way, the little girl with the pretty name should be 'Morning Star.'

Well, If I split the name, I would have to name her Morning Moon to keep with the pattern for the rest of the poems, so I'll give it a look and see what I can come up with. Thanks for taking the time to read my smattering of mattering. - Wendy

Poem about the Apache and how they remember the past. The artwork works well with this piece of poetry. This poem has nice flow. Thank you for sharing this piece of poetry.

I appreciate the time you spent with my words and hope you don't mind if I cut and paste into the other eight since I am so pressed for time on busy B & B weekends. I am glad you liked the pieces. - Wendy

Thanks Alf. My grandkids have been delighted. Not sure if it is all about the poems or knowing that their names will be on the dedication page. Regardless, they are pusing me to publish. - Wendy

Hi Wendy:

I enjoyed your tale of Morningstar. She is quite a contrast to some of the other characters I've read about in your book. This one is more serious and I enjoyed the more historic aspect, sharing about her tribe. Don't forget to add this one to the NaPoWriMo book!

Hello again Kim. I do intend to slip in a few of these teaching moments, hoping that the book appeals to a slightly broader age range. I'm glad you enjoyed it. - Wendy

Hi Wendy. This is such a wonderful children's poem! The artwork is incredibly rich with Indian tradition. Your artist does magnificent work.

Well written with a living imagery created for your reader. I can just imagine how a child would love to imagine living in this teepee and seeing all of the artwork and hearing the corresponding stories. I love how you bring the Apache's reverence to Mother Nature into your write. That is SO much a part of their heritage. My favorite line is "She likes best how drumming tales recall when Buffalo roamed free". This makes her very real to children.

Great job on this write, Wendy, and a terrific addition to your book. Had I a six left, it would be yours for this wonderful children's poem. -- Connie

Thanks Connie. I do despair at the amount of history that falls by the wayside in education these days. I understand the need to add technology to the mix, but somehow, we must find a way to teach our kids about their heritage too. The wished for sixth is honor enough. - Wendy

This one is my favorite so far. You captured the essence of the tribe and her role in it. You told of the traditions and in the morning, she is asleep. I loved the flow and rhyme and content

Thanks Barb. It is a bit different than some of the book themes, although I have plans to intersperse more of this. I'm glad you enjoyed. - Wendy

A wealth of Indian lore in this lovely pen picture of Morning Star. There is a simplicity in your phrasing that fits the subject matter well. Apache, teepee! I like it! There are shades of Hiawatha here!
Love the ballads of a people,
That like voices from afar off
Call to us to pause and listen,
Speak in tones so plain and childlike,

Thanks Tony. Although I must admit the Apache Teepe conjunction in time and space was purely accidental - but you will note that I left it in. I was thinking of Longfellow the other day. A Zoo's giraffe named April had a baby and I submitted the name Longfellow to the contest - in honor of April as NaPoWriMo. Haven't heard back yet. ; ) - Wendy

Wendy,
I enjoyed your poem for your book. The art is perfect. Your words are descriptive & appropriate for teaching Native American culture. Young children will be able to identify with the character because of her age being close to theirs.

Your lines flow smoothly with good rhymes. Good job & thanks for sharing. Jan

Thanks Jan. Some will just be fun little jumpy things and some informative. I hope the book will travel through the years with them. I'm glad you enjoyed this little teaching one. - Wendy
