Don't tell this writer he can't write a complete story in 60 words. Dynamite, this has everything. Sensitive, touching, gets to you on a number of levels. I'm not sure what six stars looks like, but this is close.

You are a multi-talented person! An 80 word flash. I've been reading all the flash fiction I can find that has already proved itself, but haven't been reviewing because, being so old, I don't know whether it counts for either of us. But this little shortie must be commented on. You have quite a few to choose from on this "ribboned" poems section in "read." And while I'm here, which English grammar and punctuation book do you consider the best. I have a Jane Straus & I don't think there's anything wrong with it but Margaret Snowdon never heard of her. It seems like the name Strunk & White comes up a lot. What say you? GoodHearted Woman (Marcia)

Thank you so much, GoodHearted Woman, for browsing through my portfolio. I love being rediscovered, and welcome the exceptional rating and your kind praise of "Birthday Wishes." There is a fine grammar program app (cheap) you could easily download called GRAMMAR-LY. When I taught, I used WARRINER'S HANDBOOK which I still think is as good as they come. Rod

Beautifully written. How sad to see someone you love come to that place in life. So much said in so few words. Congratulations on your win.

Beside Cancer, Alzheimer is the meanest disease nature has plagued us with. It's destroys not only the one trap inside its unforgiving hold, but the loves ones who watch their love one slip away. The heartache in this simple scene is tremendous.

This is excellent. Somehow this piece slipped by me. I'm sure many of us can identify with your words as most know someone with Alzheimer's/senile dementia. Congratulations on winning the contest. Marilyn

Well, this certainly is a very sad story. It's so sad because in many instances, it is an all too common reality for some elderly individuals. In other words, this kind of thing does happen.
So tragic but well written.
Best of luck to you in the competition. ~Dean

The grandmother is in hospice care and has Alzheimer's .It's her birthday but she forgot how to blow the candles. You blew the candles and made a wish. Did you wish she died? Very good flash fiction. The picture used is perfect for your write.

Hi Maggie. I will let you draw your own conclusions about what the Speaker wished for. But thanks so much for sharing "Birthday Wishes." Rod

60 words is brief and quick, yet you were able to convey emotion (sadness, pride for the grandmother, helplessness).
The mixture of her age and the location -- being a hospice--conveyed much in a few words.
Your final words are almost haunting "weeping, I make a wish and blow."
strong story.

A poignant write for the flash fiction contest. I like the way you imply at the end what the wish is. Your first paragraph sets the scene well and your few well chosen words provide good description and dialogue. Best of luck to you.

Very well written. Your very short story had everything in it to tell me about a life lived and forgotten. So sad. The picture reminded me of my own grandmother, now, gone. I miss her. Your story touched my emotions.
