Love your poem & the strong allegiance it expresses in friendship. I was also reading it, thinking the narrator could be one's main diety. You say this is "simple" (as your bestie is not a poetry aficionada) . . . but it's still quite challenging for those of us who lean toward straightforward writing. Your imagery & analogies are sophisticated & require some thinking to grasp a fuller meaning. Thanks for sharing this lovely piece. I'm sure it would be well-received as a treasured birthday gift for your friend. I am happy that you know this kind of friendship!

I have called it simple because it is very clear in its message as compared to the poems that I come across. I have tried to keep the phrasing simple in most of the parts.

Bravo, but don't forget to 'stand by you' till your last breath is exhaled ! For knowing, recognizing that all is transient, as mentioned in poem, so inhale, exhale & only promise what you can, desire to uphold & answer to. So beautifully done. This definitely merits a 6 but spendthrift that I am I've exhausted my supply already. "I will stand" makes for a line that is worth repeating. Lovely analogy with the falling leaves in the first stanza. Sometimes "fair weather friends" desert a friend who comes upon some hard times. The narrator is ready to stand with the friend, offering help through the rough times. A lovely thought that even though the narrator may not be present, his presence can still be felt. Especially liked the line "Even when I depart you will sense my presence." Beautiful wording, and it flows smoothly. judi

"Leaves may fly away" - splendid beginning draws the reader in - great use of the consonance of 'y' creating a resonance - once can see and hear the movement of the leaves.
I like the repeat usage of "I will stand", it conveys the longevity of your feelings, through all that might prevail in your own and your friend's lives.
Excellent use of the poetic techniques such as enjambment, assonance, alliteration and rhyme or near rhyme. Presentation is superb. So well done my friend.
I love your little quip in your notes ... I have a friend who wishes to support my poetry and will listen and understand the more descriptive, however he is not a true 'lover' of poetry. lol Wish I had a six. You describe it as simple ... sometimes simple can be extraordinary. :))) Hugs - Lovi xoxoxo

I was pleased to read this poem and thoughts for your friend. My bestie from school days was the first person I ever wrote a poem for ... her birthday .... she was deeply touched, and the only person I really shared my poetry with and trusted to value my writing and not make fun of it. Poetry wasn't exactly the "in thing" when I was in my mid-teens and early twenties.
You hopefully don't have that trouble because your country is full of poetry. :)))
I will try and catch up on your work ... you have been off to a roaring start as so many others ..... I've been a little slow. :))
