Susan,
this is an outstanding piece, but I'm not allowed to give you one, Evil Eddie only allowing me a five. Your descriptive writing is excellent in this piece. Your imagery is fantastic in your piece. You've effectively employed the writing devices of alliteration and metaphor. I liked your many phrases: "light glimmered on the horizon and she shook herself, The chill of the night began to wane as the sun glinted over the hills and its rays wiped the sleep from the eyes of the earth, Fall was here, the chill settled over the land, a blanket of cool that told the little hummer it was time to feed for her coming journey and peering out across the Indiana skies." I loved this piece. Your final two lines hit me profoundly: "She went out in to the wind. Out to find her destiny." I love you and you are a top notch writer. I'd recommend you piece to other reviewers. Have a fabulous day, my friend. Peace out...Melissa.

I've been trying to find out lately when hummingbirds go South. Mine are still around although I expected the to be gone by now. I think it won't be long. I loved your little nature story. I was surprised that a preying mantis woud attact a tree frog and had to look that up. You're right. The bigger one would. Nice writing.

I loved your story of the nature of things. I don't know anyone but your and I who would write about insects and their battles LOL. Do you remember if you read my 'Balance of Nature' story about a 'vinegaroon' and a 'wiley' scorpion? This was beautifully written and I loved how you introduced us to the mantis through the flight of the hummingbird and then came back to it in the end. I'll miss them too. I took a great photo of hummingbird in the snow drinking nectar from a rosemary plant.
I always know when I settle in to read one of your stories, I'm in for a treat! Thanks for sharing friend. Marcia

Thank you Marcia...your kindness means a lot to me...Down your way, they may stay a bit longer? I'm not sure? But, I know this much, this winter is going to be a long cold one. I bet. BUT hope not! I haven't felt well, I do hope you forgive me not reading much lately....I am so tired I can barely get out of bed anymore. HUGS young lady...my heart is in Tenn. ")) Susan

I'm sorry you've not been feeling well, dear friend. I've suffered from lack of energy myself. And motivation. It comes in spurts. Maybe it's 'old age' LOL (in my case). I'll keep you in my prayers and hope you'll be feeling better. I hope it's not a long cold winter. I'll definitely be more wary of the ice this winter! No more falls! You be careful too! Take care and write (and read) when you feel up to it. Hugs, Marcia

My picture of the hummingbird in the snow was in So. California high desert. I thought I answered this but maybe it didn't 'save'. Your no. one priority is taking care of yourself, so of course, do that first :) I do miss you when you're not around, but of course I understand. Take care and hugs, back - Marcia

I'm always amazed at the precision focus with which you detail your scenes. A bit philosophic and moody, the actions of the animals are well recorded, as though through a photographer's lens. Happy to say I saw a hummingbird in our yard but once this summer---I don't have a feeder (yet), but looking forward to the cardinals and chickadees keeping us company througout the colder months. Watching those small, black and white birds hopping about the branches of our bushes from the kitchen window...

This is a wonderful poem about those busy little humming birds-now you see them now you don't. As usual, my friend, you draw us into your stories with imagery that put us right there watching the whole scenario. Loved the part about the mantis and frog! Cleaver. Luv..Susan

I wish I had a sixer for you Sue. This is superb writing.
I did wince at the tiny frog being munched on ... ouch. I came across a mantis once eating a grasshopper and I actually saw a monarch butterfly come out of its crysallis!
Anyway, "The chill of the night began to wane as the sun glinted over the hills and its rays wiped the sleep from the eyes of the earth" so beautiful!!! (go into YouTube and type in Boy and Hummingbird ... then find the "movie" that is around 3 minutes long and plays the song, "Better Together" ... it will make you cry, it's so precious!)

Hey Suse. I have the link on my desktop and watch it almost daily.
Isn't the end when he's sleeping on the couch and his buddy is waiting his hand the dearest thing you've ever seen? I KNEW you'd love it. Thanks for letting me know. Love, Jude
