Congratulations on your winning entry to this contest. I admire the respectful way you broach the subject and give each side equal merit. It's good to know your strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Myself, I'm quite happy with the variety of offerings posted on this site. I like using poetry as a focus excercise, helping me narrow my thoughts and develope each concept to perhaps use later in prose. Not that I'm all that clever or talented at either! I enjoyed reading your essay and look forward always to the thoughtful wording of your posted works. Best always and congratulations--S.

Thankyou. I think I feel the same about flash fiction. It really makes you pause instead or ramble. Thanks for such a high rating.

Ugh...by the time I master the short-short, it will no longer be en vogue, lol. But, I keep on, keeping on...my personal challenge/hell. *grin*

I have to give it to you. A compelling argument! There have been more than just a few writers I have given a grrr to when they have stalled on a chapter. I myself have gotten a grr or two as well. But we must go on.
The first poem I ever wrote was just last month. I cannot understand how some of these poets do it. Turning out work after wonderful work. It seems impossible.
I agree with you an many points, but mostly the last. I love to read. I love to write and if I learn a thing or two from different styles well than... That is why we are here after all!
good luck in the contest...

This is an excellent essay and I like the points you make here. It is true, many poets can cross over effectively to writing stories and novles. Best wishes for the contest.

I loved this very respectful, thoughtful and understanding prose piece (a refreshing exception to the other entries!). Your insights are excellent and succinctly delivered. One very small nit: coma s/b comma LOL! Best of luck in this contest with a wonderful entry. Hugs, Sue

.
This is an exceptional essay analyzing the juxtaposition of poetry vs. prose here in FS, as well as generally speaking. Extremely well written with descriptive details and images, as well as richly textured words, sporadically sprinkled with humor. As a die hard poet who occasionally excursions into writing prose, I can relate to your thought process and issues raised. I feel that the bottom line is all of us love to engage words and creatively craft them as either prose, poetry and/or both. Thank you for sharing your views in this outstanding essay, my friend.

this is such a beautifully written entry, so very well articulated! i loved the questions you asked, and the answers you supposed...i envy those of you who can write.....really write......i write poems, because, i'll be honest, they come so very easily to me.....but my longing is for a STORY!!!alas, i fear that takes a little more work than i have in me right now.....not to say that poets on this site don't work at their craft....some poems are so very well written, i long to frame them.......but, kudos to you.....i love this piece!!!!! blessings, and thank you for sharing!!!!!

oh, you are too very sweet!!!!!! i think i don't take my writing seriously, because it does come so easily to me, (except those darn haikus and senryus, ha ha ....i suck seriously at those!)....but i often THINK in rhyme, so its nothing for me to write it down....but a story like you just wrote????? i've been working a a dumb little childrens book for 6 years....i have the whole book....i could so easily put it in rhyme....but to narrate it, and actually, God forbid....truly write it???? i have started though, and it will eventually get done.....but YOU, and people like you, are my definition of writers....i don't know who you are, but you have my total respect....and sincere appreciation for your wonderful reply(which was also so very well written!) bless you!!

This is question I often ask myself, however this is also a question which you have answered for your self too.

I find this a very interesting write and I find the subject of 'pro, cons and the way you think', fully covered. Your thought pattern as per the remit also fully covered.

A well written and thought out essay.

When I'm finished here, I'm off to Judian James...the line you quoted gave me the chills. This is an excellent piece and describes, perfectly the way wordsmith's live side by side, regarless of their chosen genre. Although, for the most part, I loath Haiku. There is a poet I follow, Gungalo, that turns out so much work, It's astonishing, and most of it is, in my uneducated opinion, fancy stuff....
I caught the nod to my story and apologize for making wait, but you always bust my chops when I rush. Cheryl

The answer is yes, absolutely. (To both points in your second last sentence.)
Generally speaking, both poets and writers of prose are necessary to present a complete picture for readers. However, for mutual enjoyment of everyone, readers are the most important of all. A performer needs an audience, no matter what the medium.

I enjoyed the thoughts presented in this essay and identify with some of the points raised. Great job.

Good luck in the contest.

I weave my stories with threads of silver, trying to induce the reader to feel the character's heart beat, pulsating as she gazes at a crimson sky or the pit of her despair. For the next two hundred words I will feel compelled to splatter words on my canvas, hoping that I will strike a chord that will allow the reader to feel the depth of my character's sorrow.
We are in the same club. While I go through this process, I die a few times before hearing that "PING" chord.

Judian James, the poet, wrapped it up in twenty words!
In fact, poets are so far up the food chain that they don't even need to play by the rules. While I struggle, trying to decide on a coma or semi-colon, poets disregard punctuation altogether.
I had a few laughs here. Yup, poets like Judian James do make it "appear" an easy task. But choosing and arranging those twenty words probably take longer time than writing 200 words of prose. I like the food chain image - I guess poets are up there where less is more.
I think taking the comma out of my writing will leave my complexion smoother, wrinkle free. I'm pestered by that dreaded "To insert or not to insert?" - the comma, I mean.

They seem to have the ability to volley over the genres and expand a stanza into a thousand word essay. Whereas, Haiku, be damned, I've never successfully reduced a thought to fifteen syllables.
I laughed at this. The world is SOOOOOO unfair!!!But we, prose writers should not give up hope. So, today we conquer prose, tomorrow we WILL conquer poetry (hopefully).

How is it that a poem will get two hundred hits, while a short story is lucky to get fifty reads?
Time, focus, and returns on reading time versus $$$ earned. And also there is that immediate satisfaction knowing you've gained a complete experience after reading the poem. As you've mentioned with Mastery's chapter - the waiting for the next chapter kills where a novel is concerned.

And, I suppose part of me doesn't care. I want to read and I want to write.
Good for you. Keep it up.
