The benefits of criticism...25 total reviews

This topic of criticism is very Jermaine to what we all experience, come from an earlier age than others and some to a greater damaging degree than others. Many have to spend years of therapy due to criticism. You have given those in need a good start.

Great subject that is sure to be a hit on FanStory. You have made some excellent points particularly regarding emotional reactions to what might in the heat of the moment seem more like personal criticism than helpful critique.
While I enjoyed your essay there is a fair amount of SPaG and here is my short list:
2 (Two) of the most common reactions to criticismare quite non-constructive:
What follows is (are) some tips to help you do this.
The following line should be positioned after the bad critique section: "It's worth pointing out here that we should never view our work in these negative terms either."
Too wordy in addition to a few creative uses of punctuation such as here:
Whilst these reactions arecommonplace and understandable, they actually rob you of a great opportunity - to learn and to grow from honest feedback. Unneeded dash
and here:
Whilsthard and painful, if you learn to take criticism in the right way, you may even come to enjoy it. Perhaps even love it... Unneeded ellipsis
That said, it is a most interesting subject and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. :)

This article could be a great help to many of us. You are exactly right in encouraging the writer to look more carefully and maybe see how the advice you receive could help your writing. The only thing you could add is, if you make an honest attempt to help others and they tell you that you don't know what you are talking about, shake it off. That criticism goes both ways.

This writing is utter rubbish and you shouldn't have wasted your fingers on the keyboard.
But seriously, it contains so much wisdom. I am the worst with criticism, though I try to be grown up. I think I just revert in my memory to the constant stinging criticism from my father when I was a boy. Your advice is carefully worded and extremely useful. Thank you.

Thank you for this, G. I found it very helpful. You had a calming presence of wisdom and experience throughout. I especially enjoyed the difference between a good and bad critique/criticism.
Sending you my best today as always,
Sally :))

I recently gave a 4 to a 'dialogue only' contest entry. The author have a few reviewers who gave her a 6. I told the woman she need to tighten it and gave a few examples. Since so many others gave her excellent ratings, it took her aback. Should I have mentioned that my two and three act plays received contest recognition by Writers' Digest? I think that would qualify me as knowing what I was talking about.

This is a well-constructed and organized essay on a subject that can be painful, but also highly useful. All athletes, musicians, and other professionals need to hear criticism so they can improve. Often, it's the biggest weaknesses that can become our greatest strengths if we take that criticism and learn from it.

This article about criticism, Taking It on the Chin, uses the common sense we apply to all learning to guide or writing development as well. The first attempt is likely never the last one, as no one is really above critique. Your steps to a better response to criticism is on the bead.

This is such a helpful and enlightening piece that every writer should read and take to heart. I appreciated how well constructed it was, easy to follow and easy to understand. One of the things I have always enjoyed about FanStory is the opportunity to receive feedback from talented writers who can make valid suggestions that help you improve your work. What a blessing that is. Thank you for helping us to see how best to benefit from criticism. Well done.

As someone who has taken it on the chin from you several times I totally agree with your two basic reactions. The first time I was resistant. After that I withered. Thanks for sharing your thought process behind this.
