Yes, Jim, you are right that a smile can make a significant difference in the spirit of someone in distress, even if you cannot do more, as it at least shows that person is neither shunned nor invisible. Beyond that, "more" need not be much in these times when we all are at risk.
For instance, last December, when the Salvation Army bell-ringer was at the grocery store I can walk to, besides what I put in the kettle, with a smile I handed her a couple of dollars to offset her fuel to drive there. With tears in her eyes, she smiled back and thanked me, as her tank was low and she was worried about getting home safely. I would have given her more, but I was short of funds for my groceries. My Social Security was going up by a hundred dollars per month, but the big corporate landlord who bought the entire complex I am living in raised my rent by $125 per month, leaving me with less than nothing to cover the rising inflation in the cost of food and everything else. Only God knows what other stresses that bell-ringer woman was suffering.

I thank you for writing such an empathetic and insightful piece. The economy is getting worse and homelessness is a reality - wth many more at risk. It costs nothing to share the milk of human kindness. Just a smile can make the difference to someone on the edge of desperation and despair. We needed this reminder.

Very well done. I don't think I ever read a double Kyrielle, and you really did credit to the form.
I see these people often, some stand on the edge of the roads, some are in the midst of the busy highway. The signs some wear break one's heart. Especially after the Pandemic, many people ended up in that situation, many lost their jobs and their entire savings, and many are still unemployed. There is a lot of trouble in the world. Let's pray for all the homeless in the world that they find homes and source of support.

Woe to the looker indeed! A soul stirring poem of the homeless crisis we have worldwide. My father was homeless by choice long before this term exsisted. A travesty of our day.

I would have to say, yes, a smile could change a soul's heartache! This is a tender plea to humanity to take a second look at the homeless and give them a smile or a meal or sit down and listen, really listen to their story.
They all have one, the reason why they are so down and out. Remember that we could be one of them so easily with just one calamity or tragedy that might bestow upon us.
So, hurray for your poem and the reaching out to give a smile to a stranger.
It could open up the heart and make the world seem like a possible place to grow.
We all need continual growth in our lives.

They don't go short of a good meal, a bed to lie on, and a roof over their heads. They need to experience it to know what they are doing to their people.
