This story, The Food Chain, or Jessica: Apex Predator, is a cheeky turn on the concerned conservationist with the critter cancelling car.

I'm not sure I know how to feel about this story. Jessica is kind, and loves her cat, Abby, and volunteers to protect the lives of birds. However, the sound of an animal crunching under the wheels of her car was satisfying. I would have been creeped out. It seems as though trapping predators in cages would be better than crunching them. I'm glad this is fiction.

Oh my goodness this is not like you at all Lisa, especially as you love cats so much. An inventive horror story and I enjoyed the ride, even though the killing seemed mean, love Dolly x

Ouch! Everything we do somehow affects our world even if we don't realise it.
I have enjoyed your story very much, and I find it very original as I don't know much about this topic.
Reading other members' posts is really educational.
Thanks for sharing.

I'm not sure if it's okay to laugh at this story or not. It was humorous but also thought-provoking because in the animal kingdom, there are killings as part of life. And ironically, Jessica's work is to remove the predators from the area to preserve the other wildlife. But apparently, her car is taking those predators permanently off the list! I like that you assure the reader that Jessica is an animal lover with her pet Abby at home.
Best wishes in the contest!

The first thing I noticed was the picture - that Siamese looks like a Seal Point (I have two)!

This was an interesting flash - it's amazing how paring the word count can give you a quick, clear idea of what's going on. You've done a great job choosing your words.

My first reaction was "why would she be happy about killing a cat," but it makes sense to the story. Plus, I love taking a roach or spider out under my foot, so what's the difference?

Good luck in this contest.

Lisa,

hahaha! I was trying to figure out what she could have run over that would leave her feeling satisfaction. hahaha I mean, a snake, sure. Absolutely - all day long, right?

But by leaving us to wonder for a bit, you allow us a while to get to know the character and do some guessing. Nice!

Well done! Thanks!

Lisa,
I know you are an animal lover, so I imagine you are playing devil's advocate with the protagonist's point of view.
Nonetheless, it is a great story of altruism (caring about the birds) or selfishness (at the feral cat's expense) whichever is the reader's point of view.
Thought provoking.
Good luck with this one, Lisa.

That's awful that she found the sound of killing an animal satisfying! I don't care that she was trying to save birds! Any creature has a right to live and exist in nature's ecosystem!
Don't get me wrong, I love birds and they need protection in sanctuaries such as the one she works in but to find pleasure in any killing is wrong!
Well told as usual but offensive to me as I am not a hunter nor appreciate how they hunt for sport. When necessary to eat I understand it but for sport or other reasons, I have a hard time with it.
Thank you for sharing and for letting me share.
Jesse

Hi LisaMay. I liked this flash fiction because you raise a few moral issues. First, if she's so concerned about the bird population, why on earth does she own a cats. Cats do kill birds as we all know. It's instinct and a means to survive.
Then when she runs over the feral cat she should have checked if it needed to be put down.
And then we have the irony of the last incident.
As I said, I really liked this short story. Very well written. Good luck. Ulla:)))
