This is fantastic writing, Mary. I loved how you illustrated that life goes on around these cemeteries that have become home to the deceased. I also loved that you pointed out that no matter who you are, death makes us all equal.
I look forward to reading more of your work.

Such an interesting and informative piece of writing. I'm fortunate to live a short walk from a beautiful old cemetary in a rural part of Co. Galway in Ireland. It's a hive of history, with some headstones dating back to the late 1600's, and then some as recent as 2012. Great place to spend an hour or two, learning or imagining about the sleeping souls therein. Anyway, thank you for sharing your story, and for the timely reminder that death is the great equalizer. So well written.

I agree with you visiting an old cemetery and reading the stones heightens both the imagination and learning experience. In Boston, we have the Old Granary Cemetery in the middle of downtown that dates back to 1660. Many of the names associated with the Revolutionary War are buried there.

I will say that this is a very informative and blessed writing.
I enjoyed your descriptive measures on both cemeteries.
And at first I wondered why would somebody want to have a wedding where people have been placed to rest?
But the beauty is so incredible and well worth that experience.
...
Some people are so much in the cemeteries they spend the night there because of the peacefulness.
There have been quite a few horror movies written about cemeteries.
...
I know in the town I used to live in in Manahawkin New Jersey there's a church and a cemetery.
Of course going back to the 1700s.
I know means would you call this a place to take a tour.
And the people that are living here are not dying to get to know you!

Thank you for your review and kind words. I love your review it is refreshing. I cannot say I would spend a night in any of them but a cemetery going back to the 1700s would be interesting.

I enjoyed reading your essay, it is informative and contains some interesting history. I live here on Cape Cod so I know the location of these cemeteries. Your writing compares the differences between the two cemeteries yet all is the same in the end, how well a person lives their life. Excellent writing.

Such a powerful piece you've written here, Mary. Simple, yet profound in its use of contrast of two lifestyles, yet statistically leveled to the same common denominator: death. I found it humorous that two of America's more notable personages, William and Henry James, both of whom had oodles of money, chose (or had chosen for them) such modest resting places for their eternities. Geez, you've done such a beautiful job with this. Thank you for sharing it. Just one small spelling error.

It was a cheat-fix. I kept getting a blue underscore for it (on Word, where I had pasted it for reviewing). When I checked on why, it corrected the spelling to Wendell. I followed up with a Google search, and there it was. Certainly no big deal!

Hello Mary!
I enjoyed your non-fiction essay immensely.
As a child, I grew up across from a 200-year-old-cemetery filled with the tombstones of Civil War heroes, settlers, and "famous" residents from my hometown of Saginaw, Michigan. You may find this odd, but I spent many long and beautiful afternoons, throughout the four seasons, walking the paths of that serene place. Memories I still treasure to this day...
Thank you for sharing!

Very well written, Mary. Our final resting place is not in the cemetery, but through God's gates where no matter what we have achieved or how acclaimed some say, we are equal - no better or no worse. As I age, I fear the younger generations will not visit the graves of their ancestors nor even take much time to remember them. You have done a great honor to all who lie in peace, in both cemeteries. Well done!

Always, Carol

Never have I been more interested to read of a cemetery before. I actually am quite queasy about them for I have not yet mastered that fear of death. Yet, Mary, within your writing I find some solace that helps me understand we all have our time, sad as it seems, and all the greatness I have read here in this work, makes me realize that thoughts are to all, and all these great people perhaps, in some way had thoughts as I, yet, they contributed so much...so I will try to make this my beginning in understanding my worth.
Always super to read from you.
Thank you.
My best wishes.
Have a pleasant Sunday.

Thank you for your kind words and review. I am honored by the six star rating. Of course I visit the Cambride Cemetery to my folks grave. I have walked through both cemeteries. I find them to be quite calming for the silence of those sleeping. The stones tell you they loved, enjoyed life and have left behind their art, writing, friends or sacrifices for us to enjoy and honor.
My very best wishes and regards

I very much enjoyed the poetry and though you have tried your hand in that area, I may say you did very well. Also, it was very nice to hear on a place that I have never been and get a different focus on the cemetery instead of in a traditional resting place view. Thanks for all the great writing and much luck in your endeavors.
